6.8 Magnitude Earthquake - Russia

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.8 struck today near the Kuril Islands, a remote archipelago between Russia's Far East and Japan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The temblor's epicenter was 100 miles (161 km) south-southwest of Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia, and 1,231 miles (1,981 km) northeast of Tokyo, Japan. It originated 3 miles (4.9 km) deep and struck at 4:12 a.m. Saturday local time [1812 Friday UTC], the USGS reports.
Earthquakes of this size are considered major and can cause significant damage, especially with poorly built structures. Even well designed buildings can be damaged or, in some cases, destroyed depending on the severity of the quake and a building’s proximity to the epicenter. Earthquakes of this size are sometimes followed by significant aftershocks.
But the damage caused by any single event depends on the quake's depth, proximity to populated areas, building standards in the region, as well as the type of earthquake. The USGS frequently updates the magnitude of an event after more data is analyzed.
An earthquake's magnitude is a measure of the energy released at the source. It is just one predictor of the shaking that may ensue, which is affected by local and regional geology. Scientists know in a general sense what causes Earthquakes but are unable to predict specific quakes.

M 6.1 Strong earthquake hits Chile

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck western Chile.

centred 480km north of the capital, Santiago and 89km north-west of the port city of Coquimbo was at a depth of 61.8km.  It hit at 4.02pm Wednesday local time.
No reports of injuries
Chile's state emergency office, Onemi, said there were no reports of injuries, disruptions to basic services or infrastructure damage as a result of the tremor.
The navy said the quake did not meet the conditions needed to trigger a tsunami.
World No.1 copper producer Codelco said its operations were normal, and no mines in the metal-producing country reported damages.
Seismically active Chile was battered in February 2010 by an 8.8 magnitude quake and ensuing tsunami, which caused billions in damage and killed hundreds.

Powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake strikes the Gulf of Alaska

ALASKAA powerful, deep 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Gulf of Alaska at a depth of about 55 km (34.3 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was about 562 km (349 miles) SE (133°) from Anchorage, AK. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami warning was not issued for the earthquake, that was followed by at least two minor aftershocks. There have been no reports of damages or injuries. Today’s earthquake is the latest in a series of powerful quakes that has seen the planet reeling from increased seismicity activity, from Guatemala to Myanmar. Clearly, a season of planetary geological change is upon us.

6.5 Magnitude Quake Rattles Guatemala's Coast

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook Guatemala's Pacific coastline on Sunday, just four days after a major quake killed dozens and left thousands without homes in the region.
People fled buildings and homes in panic in cities along Guatemala's coast near its border with Mexico on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or major damage. Locals were further panicked by four aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.0.
Eddy Sanchez, director of Guatemala's National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology and Hydrology, urged residents to avoid returning to buildings and homes with structural damage from the last quake.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 19 miles (30 kilometers) west-southwest of Champerico, Guatemala, and 185 kilometers (115 miles) southwest of Guatemala City. It had a depth of 27 kilometers (17 miles) and was centered off the country's coast.
Seismologists say it was the strongest aftershock yet from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that killed 52 people in western Guatemala on Wednesday.
That quake, the country's strongest in 36 years, left thousands of people without homes, electricity or water; and emotionally devastated one small town by wiping out almost an entire family.
It was felt as far as Mexico City. It affected as many as 1.2 million Guatemalans and was followed by 70 aftershocks in the first 24 hours.
Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina had deployed more than 2,000 soldiers to the region to help with the disaster. The U.S. State Department said it was sending some $50,000 in immediate disaster relief, including clean water, fuel and blankets.

6.6 Magnitude Earthquake hits Myanmar

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck north-central Myanmar early Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake was reported to be only 6.2 miles deep.
No tsunami warnings were issued, due to the quake's inland location.
Two 5.0-magnitude aftershocks were reported in the region, according to the Geological Survey.
In March 2011, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake near Myanmar's borders with China, Thailand and Laos killed at least 75 people. At least 111 people were injured, Myanmar Radio reported.
Daily life is hard for many Burmese. A country that was one of the richest in Asia 50 years ago is now one of the poorest.

update:
A series of strong aftershocks added to the nervousness, although there were no immediate reports of deaths or collapsing buildings.

Update Report Live:

"I ran from my bed carrying my daughter out to the street. There were many people in the road. Some were shouting and others felt dizzy," Mandalay resident San Yu Kyaw told AFP by telephone.

"People are now scared of more earthquakes. Especially those who live or run businesses in high-rise buildings are desperate and don't know what to do," he said.

The were no immediate reports of casualties but building standards are generally poor in the country formerly known as Burma, one of Asia's most impoverished nations.

The USGS issued a yellow alert, saying "some casualties and damage are possible" but that the impact should be relatively localised.

The quake hit at 7:42 am (0112 GMT) and was followed by two shallow 5.0-magnitude aftershocks within 20 minutes, according to the USGS.

It struck around 572 kilometres east of the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, one of the world's biggest cities.

The quake was felt in neighbouring Thailand, including in the capital Bangkok, according to reports on social media websites.

The earthquake comes little more than a week before US President Barack Obama is due in Myanmar on a historic visit, as the West begins to roll back sanctions to reward a series of dramatic political reforms under President Thein Sein.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Myanmar.

Kyaw Kyaw Lwin, an official at the National Earthquake Information Division in the capital Naypyidaw, said it was the strongest quake in the area since a 6.0-magnitude quake in 1991.

More than 70 people were killed in March 2011 when a powerful 6.8-magnitude quake struck Myanmar near the borders with Thailand and Laos, reducing homes and government buildings to rubble and affecting thousands of people.

Aid workers at the time praised Myanmar's regime for its speedy response to that quake, in contrast to the aftermath of previous disasters to strike the country under the old military junta.

M 4.3 Earthquake strikes eastern Kentucky

A light 4.3 magnitude earthquake rattled southeastern Kentucky on Saturday at 12:08 p.m. ET, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake have a depth of 23 km, was in the Appalachian Mountains near the Virginia border, and centered in the rural town of Blackey, the agency said.

the quake was  notiecable in 9 US States
West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio und Indiana.

update:

Lt. Ken Sexton of the Whitesburg Fire Department said officials in Letcher County were currently trying to assess damages, but they had not received any reports of injuries about an hour after the quake.
National Weather Service and National Geological Service have confirmed it.
Meteorologist Chris Bailey of WKYT said Saturday’s earthquake was the second strongest quake on record in Kentucky after a 5.2 quake hit that hit Bath County in 1980.
The National Earthquake Information Center of the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake at 12:08 p.m. On social media, people reported feeling it as far west as Lexington and Mount Sterling.
But the most dramatic effects were in Eastern Kentucky.
Will Nash of Teach for America was in Prestonsburg doing a professional development training with a group of 25 teachers.
“Felt it in the library as ceiling fans and books shook,” he wrote on Twitter.
Dispatcher Barbara Brashear of Perry County emergency services in Hazard said they had received two reports of property damage so far, but no injuries.
“We have reports of a lot of pictures falling off the wall,” she said. “We’ve been told it was felt as far up as Cincinnati and as far south as Georgia.”
State Police in Hazard cover five counties — Perry, Letcher, Knott, Leslie, Perry and Breathitt. Dispatcher Ryan Adams said there were no injuries or structural damage report, but “we’re getting reports from all across the region of people’s pictures being knocked off the wall, and ceramic figurines being broken,” he said.
Tom Monarch was on the second floor of his Chevy Chase home when he felt a vibration like an “unbalanced washing machine.”
“It sustained for a little over 30 seconds,” he said, but it reminded him of feeling the 1980 earthquake when he was a child in Frankfort. “It kept vibrating and then it tapered off.”
Harlan County emergency services reported no injuries or property damage.

Update: Earthquake Guatemala - M 7.4

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Guatemala on Wednesday, killing at least 39 people as it ravaged a small state near the Mexican border, the country's president said.
The mountain village of San Marcos, 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the epicenter, suffered much of the damage with about 30 homes collapsing in its center. Hundreds of frightened villagers were on the streets, one of which was cracked open by the temblor, the strongest to hit Guatemala since a deadly 1976 quake that killed 23,000.
More than 300 people, including firefighters, policemen and villagers, worked at a sand extraction site to rescue seven people reported buried alive, including a 6-year-old boy that had accompanied his grandfather to work.
"I want to see Giovanni! I want to see Giovanni!" the boy's mother, Francisca Ramirez, frantically cried. "He's not dead. Get him out."
President Otto Perez Molina told a news conference that he has been informed that the death toll stands at 39 people. The dead are in the northwestern state of San Marcos near the Mexican border, where the majority of the damage occurred.
The quake, about 20 miles deep, was centered about 15 miles off the coastal town of Champerico and about 100 miles southwest of Guatemala City, shaking buildings as far away as Mexico City and El Salvador.
Survivors by radio and social media talked of widespread landslides and people trapped.
"I've been in Guatemala for almost two years I am used to earthquakes. This was a lot more severe, a lot more shaky," said Peace Corps volunteer Adam Baker, 27, of Carmel, Indiana, who tweeted a picture of a small landslide behind his house in the nearby state of Quetzaltenango. "Things fell in my kitchen."
Perez said more than 2,000 soldiers were deployed from a base in San Marcos to help with disaster relief. A plane had already made two trips with special disaster relief teams to the San Marcos area, about 80 miles from the epicenter. He asked that civilians in the country of 14 million stay put and not travel on highways because of the collapse highways and debris. He also encouraged people in the affected areas to evacuate.
The president said the country was on the highest level of alert for subsequent earthquakes in the next few hours. Perez encouraged civilians in affected areas to evacuate and avoid tall buildings.
"There is very high risk of aftershocks," the president said, adding that 150 people had already been evacuated by air.

Nicaragua's disaster management agency said it had issued a local tsunami alert, but there were no immediate reports of a tsunami on the country's Pacific coast.
The country's minister of communications and infrastructure told Emisoras Unidas that landslides had cut off several highways in the west of the country, and it would take at least 24 hours to reestablish transport links to San Marcos, the capital of the department or state of the same name located along Guatemala's northwest border with Mexico.
A spokesman for El Salvador's Red Cross branch told The Associated Press that the quake had been felt throughout the country, sending people fleeing their homes in the capital, but there had been no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. He said there had been no local tsunami warning issued. El Salvador's Civil Protection agency said officials were evacuating some coastal communities as a precautionary measure.
The mayor of Mexico City said no serious damage or injuries had been reported in the city, although many people had fled their offices and homes during the quake.

Earthquake Warning

Strong quake hits off Guatemala

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.4 has struck off the Pacific coast of Guatemala.
The tremor, which hit about 23km (15 miles) from the coastal town of Champerico, shook buildings from Mexico City to San Salvador, witnesses said.
No tsunami warning was issued, and officials said no reports of serious damage had been received.
The region is regularly hit by quakes, which have periodically caused major damage and sparked mudslides.

USA - Geologists find East Coast quakes travel farther

RICHMOND — The U.S. Geological Survey says the 2011 Virginia-centered earthquake shows that East Coast tremors can travel much farther and cause damage over larger areas than previously thought.
The agency estimates that about one-third of the U.S. population could have felt the magnitude 5.8 tremor. That’s more than any earthquake in U.S. history.
The earthquake centered about 50 miles northwest of Richmond caused more than $200 million in damage.
And scientists found the quake triggered landslides at distances four times farther and over an area 20 times larger than previous research quakes has shown.
The findings are being presented Tuesday at the Geological Society of America conference in Charlotte, N.C.
Officials say the information will be used for risk assessments and emergency preparedness.

Verhalten bei einem (schweren) Erdbeben

Während des Erdbebens:

Bei Aufenthalt im Gebäude:

• Bleiben Sie ruhig! Keine Panik!

• Telefonieren Sie in dringendsten Notfällen: keine langen Gespräche!
oben bezeichneten Art einzusammeln.

National Committee of Emergency declares seismic alert for Central Costa Rica

COSTA RICA - Costa Ricans are on alert, which was declared by the National Committee of Emergency due to the seismic activity in the central region. The western province of Guanacaste and the Great Metropolitan Area are the most active regions and authorities are asking residents a continued vigilance. Although other movements must occur to catalog the situation, it is peculiar the succession of recent tremors in very short periods of time, said seismological network specialist of the University of Costa Rica, Lepold Linkimer. At this time, experts analyze the phenomenon to determine if is related to Aguas Calientes tectonic fault, which caused one of the country’s most destructive earthquakes in the past century, said prensalibre.cr. During the last hours, the fault that goes through Escazu municipality has originated seven earthquakes between 2.2 and 3.1 degrees on the    Richter scale, said the organization. –Costa Rica Star
